Setting a direction bit to 1 assigns the corresponding DIO line as an input, while setting it to 0 make it an output. At startup, all DIO lines are configured as inputs. The use of handshaking on lines DISTB/DIO7 and DOSTB/DIO6 overrides the direction configuration for these lines while enabled.
